4 Ways to Transition Your Outdoor Space for Fall
September 7, 2021
I love my sunroom for spending time outdoors and entertaining, but the mood of it is super summery. With fall arriving, it’s time to rethink some elements of the design and decor to bring in those autumn elements and evoke a cozier feeling. Use these four tips to transition your outdoor space for fall as well!

Just because it’s after Labor Day, that doesn’t mean your outdoor or transitional spaces are off limits. Fall is actually one of my favorite times of the year to be outside, with the cooling weather, gorgeous colors, and extra fun activities (like apple picking)!
Each of these tips will help you transform your space easily, quickly, and without spending too much money. Plus, I’ve included some fun specific suggestions if you’re not sure where to start.
Make it Extra Cozy
Brisk, windy days are coming, and that means you will want your outdoor spaces to feel a bit more snug and intimate, rather than the relaxing haven of summer. Adding softer materials is the best way to achieve this. Throw pillows and blankets, outdoor rugs, and table linens will cushion the whole space, creating that cozy environment you want.
Evoke Warmth With Color
With the cooler weather comes changing leaves. Plants are readying themselves for winter by focusing less on the cooler bright green tones of summer, and allowing their golds, oranges, and reds to shine. Take a cue from your yard or garden when it comes to the color of your outdoor decor. If your furniture itself is a summery color, try pairing it with something more fall-like. Here are some mini mood boards to get you started with color pairing.
Don’t let your outdoor spaces get stuck in the summer when it’s so easy to transition to fall. Here are 4 great tips and plenty of products to help you switch over your space!
Feature the Harvest Feeling
When I think about fall, it’s all about apples, squash, pumpkins, and corn husks. So why not bring those motifs into your outdoor decorating? The harvest season is full of lovely little details that can really help conjure up those autumn emotions. If you are a Halloween fan, add in some spooky season details as well!
Light it All Up
One of my least favorite features of fall is the sunsets that just get earlier and earlier everyday. When it comes to your outdoor spaces, that means no more natural light after dinner, and sometimes even before! But you can work with this challenge by bringing in festive and seasonal light sources, like candles, lanterns, and string lights. Not only will these illuminate the space, but they can also help create that cozy atmosphere.
Will you be spending sweater weather outside in a newly updated porch, patio, or sunroom? I’d love to hear how your own areas transform. But if you don’t have outdoor decor, these tips aren’t limited to these spaces either! While I am focusing on these four decorating techniques in my sunroom specifically, I also use each of these ideas throughout my home when updating to fall decor.
