Pears have quite a storied history, dating back to the ancient Romans and Celts, and possibly even earlier to prehistoric times, and we’re still enjoying the unique-shaped fruit today.

The most common variety of pears is the Bartlett, which have a buttery texture and that classic pear flavor. Boscs usually have a bit of spice, and d’Anjou pears can be reminiscent of citrus. Their are other cultivars, but these are the ones you’ll see most often.

I love pears not only for their distinct flavor and soft texture, but because they ripen off the tree. Usually, pears are harvested before they are fully ripe. So you can buy a basket of them at the market and place them in a fancy bowl on your fall table, watching them transform from green to yellow, before you use them in one (or two, or all) of these delicious recipes.
